While the Indian economy is witnessing one of its worst phases ever, there are a few leaders in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who would go to any extent to defend their failure and would rather prefer to remain ignorant instead of acknowledging this serious issue.
Here are some of the funny statements given by BJP leaders:
- “Usually every year there is a cyclic slowdown in the economy during ‘saawan-bhado’ (the fifth and sixth months in the Hindu calendar), but this time some political parties are creating noise over it to vent their frustration after the loss in elections,” Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi tweeted on Sunday.
- Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Indian economy is doing better than the other countries including the United States and China. “It is a continuous process. Business-related reforms were carried out by this government ever since it came to power in 2014. We have not lost the momentum; we are keeping that high on agenda,” Sitharaman said.

- Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Saturday said termed demonetisation and GST as “historic” decisions and said that the economy of India is in “safe and honest hands.”
- The then Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani in 2015 had said that PM Modi is a great economist. “Modiji is a great economist. He has given a positive direction to the nation’s economy which earlier economic stalwarts at the helm had failed to do,” she had said.
All these statements stand in stark contrast to what the condition of the economy is today.
A private survey has shown that manufacturing activity in India slowed to a 15-month low in August because of factories cutting down on production due to slow sales.
Every sector of the economy is witnessing a downfall. The one impacted the most is the auto industry where sales of both, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles have plummeted. According to the industry itself, there will be job losses to the tune of 10 lakh if the situation does not change.
Instead of such ‘big’ statements, big reforms are needed to be brought in place to revive the economy.
