Day before floor test, Ajit Pawar resigns as Maharashtra deputy CM

Hours after the Supreme Court ordered floor test in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Ajit Pawar on Tuesday resigned as the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.

In the floor test, Fadnavis has to prove that he enjoys the support of the majority of the Maharashtra assembly. However, the alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress have been reiterating that they have the support of more than 160 MLAs.

After BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis and NCP’s Ajit Pawar took oaths as Maharashtra Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister in a haste on Saturday morning, the Congress, Shiv Sena and NCP filed a plea in the Supreme Court challenging Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari’s decision.

The plea also demanded an immediate floor test to avoid “further horse-trading”.

The matter was scheduled by the apex court to be heard on Sunday at 11.30 a.m.

On Sunday, the SC asked the Centre to produce two letters before the court on Monday, one of Maharashtra Governor inviting the BJP to form the government and the other of Fadnavis staking claim to form the government.

The letters were produced before the court on Monday morning.

Following this, the Supreme Court announced that it will give its decision regarding the issue on Tuesday at 10.30 a.m.

The SC on Tuesday (today) ordered that floor test in Maharashtra be conducted tomorrow.
