Regressive forces have dismantled our institutions: Sonia Gandhi

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday took a jibe at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and said that in today’s time, rejection of diversity was defined as patriotism.

“Today, rejection of diversity is defined as patriotism. Exclusion of citizens on the basis of caste, religion and ideology has become the norm. We need to reclaim our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms and rights and secure the life of dignity and security for our people,” Sonia Gandhi said while addressing People’s Agenda- Jan Sarokar 2019.

Jan Sarokar 2019 is a move being taken together by over 200 civil society organisations publicly denouncing the Modi government. The move which was launched today in the presence of Sonia Gandhi, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, former JDU leader Sharad Yadav, CPI’s D Raja, RJD’s Manoj Jha, also plans to launch a door-to-door campaign seeking this government’s ouster.

On the inauguration, the former Congress President further said that regressive forces had systematically dismantled our institutions.

“Regressive forces have systematically dismantled our institutions. The current government has undermined the welfare architecture that was laid down over last 65 years,” she said.

Throwing light on the previous UPA government’s work, Sonia Gandhi said that under the leadership of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, government and civil society worked together.

“It wasn’t an easy task, but with the support of civil society, our government spearheaded policies that gave shape to the dreams and aspirations of crores of fellow Indians,” she added.

She further said that they would that India becomes a nation where promises are honoured, commitments made are fulfilled and the words and deeds of the government carry credibility.

She concluded quoting India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s words that “there is no room for convenience or comfort while constructing a future.”
