J&K saw 176 per cent rise in number of terrorist incidents between 2014-2018

The Pulwama terror attack that took lives of as many as 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel on Thursday was the deadliest terror attack in a decade. However, the state of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a rising trend in the number of terrorist attacks in the past five years.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Home Affairs on February 05, there has been a 176 per cent rise in the number of terrorist attacks between 2014 and 2018 with a total of 1,708 incidents in the mentioned period.

The data also reveals that these five years also saw a 93 per cent rise in the number of security personnel killed in such incidents in the state.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir provided the information in the form of a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

As many as 222 terrorist incidents were reported in the state in 2014. 2015 was the only year when there was a decrease in such incidents. The number of such incidents was 208 in 2015. Thereafter, the number only increased to 322 incidents in 2016, 342 in 2017 and 614 in 2018.

Even the number of people killed in terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir saw an increase in these five years.

As many as 1,315 people were killed in such incidents in the state between 2014-2018. 185 people were reported to be killed in 2014, 164 in 2015, 247 in 2016, 333 in 2017 and 386 in 2018.

Of the total 1,315 killed, 138 were civilians, 339 were security personnel and 838 were terrorists.

In these five years, all the three categories saw a rise in the number of deaths, with the number of civilians killed by 35.71 per cent, number of security personnel by 93 per cent and number of terrorists by 133.63 per cent.

In another written reply by the Union home ministry in the Rajya Sabha, approximately 400 terrorists infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir between 2016 and 2018, with June 2018 witnessing 38 terrorists infiltrating into the state, which is the highest number of infiltrations.
