Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, while holding a press conference on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi never spoke with diamond merchant Nirav Modi at the recently concluded World Economic Forum at Davos.
However, an explosive tweet by senior print and broadcast journalist and author Swati Chaturvedi seems to turn this claim completely upside down.
She tweeted, “Breaking my sources tell me that #NiravModi & his brother had a privileged private meeting with @narendramodi in Davos!”
Also, the BJP claimed that the scam happened during the UPA rule and that PM Modi would not spare anyone involved in it.
But, if the tweet of India Today’s Managing Editor Rahul Kanwal is to be believed, then the PM was well aware of it in July 2017 and yet did not initiate any action against Nirav Modi.
Rahul Kanwal wrote, “Original whistleblower SV Hari Prasad tells me he complained to PMO in July 2016 about massive fraud by Diamond merchant Mehul Choksi. PMO forwarded complaint to Registrar of Companies. Prasad claims ROC sent him a letter closing the case without even asking him for evidence!”
On Thursday, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also cited the complaint and alleged that the PM was aware of the fraud in July and that it was even acknowledged by the PMO.
“Multiple documents, including a list of 42 FIRs that were pending, were also in the knowledge of the Prime Minister. Despite all this, Nirav Modi travelled in the business delegation to Davos in January with Prime Minister Modi. Who is responsible for biggest bank loot scam unleashed by chhota Modi?” Surjewala alleged.
The Congress also circulated a picture of PM Modi with Indian CEOs at the World Economic Forum in Davos, held in January, in which Nirav Modi is seen standing in the second row.
Nirav Modi is the key accused in the Rs. 11,500 crore PNB scam.
He is said to have left the country on January 1 this year with other accused family members leaving within a week.
